A soft pastel painting of “Frothy Sea Waves” by Manju Panchal

Choose only one master - Nature”.  Rembrandt

The soft pastel painting below is inspired by the beautiful “Frothy sea waves” which
reach the shore after a long journey. When observed closely,
the froth creates interesting shadow patterns on the sands
below. Soft pastel, I feel, is a great medium to capture the beauty
of these waves on paper.

For most of my pastel paintings, my preferred choice of paper
is undoubtedly “Canson Mi Teintes” which is available
in many different shades.

A water colour painting of a beach scene by Manju Panchal

“The world always seems brighter when you’ve just
made something that wasn’t there before.”
Neil Garman

I recently completed one of my watercolor paintings
on Canson Moulin du Roy paper and am posting the completed work
along with the steps involved in creating it. It was an early
morning scene, when we were at Colva beach
and it was not crowded. The stretch of sand far across,
and the misty look in the distance motivated me to create this work.

Size 5.5” X 8”

Step 1. Created the sky using a mix of warm and cool colours, and added the distant foliage on the left. Used wet on wet technique as I did not want to have hard edges in the distance.

Step 2. Created the bushes on the left ( Camlin Artists water color tubes ), the sandy seashore and the ocean. At this stage I have not added details anywhere.

Step 3. Added layers of colours to the bushes on the left to create the form and shadow, and flat wash of colour on the sandy seashore. Added details to the figures on the beach.

Fishermen returning home. A water color painting by Manju Panchal

“Dance with the waves,
move with the sea,
let the rhythm of the water,
set your soul free”.
C A Martine

water color painting of a scene that I came across
while I was at a seashore in Goa. Through this painting
I wanted to capture the monsoon atmosphere,
a cloudy evening sky and its lovely
reflections at the beach. The fishermen are
returning home after their day out at sea.
The painting is also intended to tell their story.

Step by step, A charcoal drawing of a landscape by Manju Panchal

"To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong." Joseph Chilton Pearce

Zero Point, ( 15,300 ft ) also known as Yume Samdong, is a small
mountain village in North Sikkim. It is about 118 kms away
from Lachung. Most tourists spend a night at Lachung
before proceeding to Zero point in the morning. Zero point
offers stunning views of snow clad mountains
 and soaring coniferous trees.

The charcoal drawing as below is a scene that we came across
while we were travelling towards Zero point during
early morning hours.

Size 6"X 8"

I decided to photograph the drawing in stages so that the viewers
can see the simple techniques that I have followed
in order to complete this artwork.

Step by step charcoal drawing using willow charcoal

Step 1. Created a faint outline and then used willow charcoal
for the background mountains.

Step by step charcoal drawing using willow charcoal

Step 2. Additional strokes using willow charcoal to block in
the darker values in the foreground.

Step 3. Lifted out clouds in the distance using kneaded eraser
and used charcoal pencil in the foreground to
to create the coniferous trees and foliage.

In the final steps I added details where ever necessary.

Step by step - A soft pastel painting of a landscape by Manju Panchal

"Colour is the pulse of the painting." Michele Cooper

The pastel painting as below is of a morning scene from
Keoladeo Ghana National Park, in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
I visited this beautiful Sanctuary in the month
 of November, some years back.

The morning sun rays  lit up the tall dry grass
blades and the scene came up live and vibrant with colours.
The warm colours  of the sunlit grass was such a contrast to the
cool colours of the shadows in the surroundings.

The soft pastel painting as above progressed in stages.
I am posting two images below.

Step 1 A soft pastel painting of a scene from Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Rajasthan

Step 1. Keeping the composition in mind, I drew a faint outline
and then blocked in the major shapes using the underlying
dark colours keeping in mind the values.
( The sky and water were painted in similar colours )

Step 2 A soft pastel painting of a scene from Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Rajasthan

Step 2. Started the second layer of colours, adding details and
strokes to suggest foliage, grass etc.Smudging only
if required, else I just leave original pastel strokes.

Step 3. In the final stage of the pastel painting, added highlights
and few other details.

Water colour painting of Blue Haven beach, West Australia by Manju Panchal

"The only time I feel alive is when I am painting". Vincent Van Gogh

Posted below is one of my latest
 works in water colour medium.
I created it using a reference photo
sent by a friend.

Seashore is one of my favorite subjects and I
enjoyed painting the crystal clear waters of the ocean
and the rocks at the beach.

Benaulim beach, Goa. A water colour painting by Manju Panchal

"The only way to deep happiness is to do something you love
to the best of your ability." Richard Feynman

A beautiful solitary tree that I came across at Benaulim beach
in Goa,  motivated me to create the water colour painting
as seen below. The tree had  its shadow as well  as reflection
 in the water underneath.

The tree with its drooping leaves and branches also kind of
narrated its survival story. Determined and resolute it stood
facing the strong  monsoon winds, rooted firmly to the ground.
We all need this kind of determination
in life at some time or other.

It was fun creating this painting as it was my
maiden attempt at painting palm leaves

Of late I have been working a lot with
the water colour medium. It is a
challenging medium yet very
satisfying.

Given below is a water colour painting of a
scene that I came across while I was

Step by Step - drawing and painting a seashore. By Manju Panchal

"When you start a painting, it is somewhat outside you.
At the conclusion, you seem to move inside the painting."
Fernando Botero

The scene below is from Bamboo island, five kilometers off the
northern  tip of Koh Phi Phi Don, in the Krabi province of Thailand.
The island has stunning beaches with beautiful rocks, white sand
and limestone cliffs behind. In the painting below the beach
is covered by the shadows cast by the tall cliffs behind.
The source of light ie the sun is behind the cliffs and
the beach is on the west side of the island.

Reaching the destination
Soft pastel painting on Canson MT paper
Size 6" X 8"

I titled the painting as "Reaching the destination" with reference
to the beautiful waves which travel a long distance
and finally reach the shore. It is a beautiful feeling
to be at a place like this and to hear the sound of the waves
splashing against the rocks, and then gently kissing
the white sand and merging with the land.

The soft pastel painting on twilight Canson MT progressed
in stages and the step by step images can be seen below.

Soft pastel painting of a landscape by Manju Panchal

" If I create from the heart; nearly everything works, if from head
almost nothing." Marc Chagall

The soft pastel painting below has been inspired
by my early morning visit to Karnala Bird Sanctuary.

The sunlit pathway and the surrounding thick
vegetation growth made for a good composition.
The light and contrast in the scene appealed
a lot to me.
