Watercolor painting of seascape by Manju Panchal

“Limitless and immortal, the waters are
the beginning and end of all
things on earth.”
Heinrich Zimmer

Created a soft pastel painting of
an early morning scene at Bogmalo Beach in Goa.
Loved the reflection of the distant hills
reflecting on the water reaching
the shoreline.

Pastel landscape painitng by Manju Panchal

" Choose only one master - Nature " Rembrandt

I decided to capture this scene, which I came across while we
were traveling on the coastal roads of Goa,  using
soft pastel medium. I primarily use
in the initial layers and give the final
 touches of Sennelier pastels.
( Purchased from Amazon.in ).

Step by step, A charcoal drawing of a landscape by Manju Panchal

"To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong." Joseph Chilton Pearce

Zero Point, ( 15,300 ft ) also known as Yume Samdong, is a small
mountain village in North Sikkim. It is about 118 kms away
from Lachung. Most tourists spend a night at Lachung
before proceeding to Zero point in the morning. Zero point
offers stunning views of snow clad mountains
 and soaring coniferous trees.

The charcoal drawing as below is a scene that we came across
while we were travelling towards Zero point during
early morning hours.

Size 6"X 8"

I decided to photograph the drawing in stages so that the viewers
can see the simple techniques that I have followed
in order to complete this artwork.

Step by step charcoal drawing using willow charcoal

Step 1. Created a faint outline and then used willow charcoal
for the background mountains.

Step by step charcoal drawing using willow charcoal

Step 2. Additional strokes using willow charcoal to block in
the darker values in the foreground.

Step 3. Lifted out clouds in the distance using kneaded eraser
and used charcoal pencil in the foreground to
to create the coniferous trees and foliage.

In the final steps I added details where ever necessary.

Step by step - A soft pastel painting of a landscape by Manju Panchal

"Colour is the pulse of the painting." Michele Cooper

The pastel painting as below is of a morning scene from
Keoladeo Ghana National Park, in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
I visited this beautiful Sanctuary in the month
 of November, some years back.

The morning sun rays  lit up the tall dry grass
blades and the scene came up live and vibrant with colours.
The warm colours  of the sunlit grass was such a contrast to the
cool colours of the shadows in the surroundings.

The soft pastel painting as above progressed in stages.
I am posting two images below.

Step 1 A soft pastel painting of a scene from Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Rajasthan

Step 1. Keeping the composition in mind, I drew a faint outline
and then blocked in the major shapes using the underlying
dark colours keeping in mind the values.
( The sky and water were painted in similar colours )

Step 2 A soft pastel painting of a scene from Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Rajasthan

Step 2. Started the second layer of colours, adding details and
strokes to suggest foliage, grass etc.Smudging only
if required, else I just leave original pastel strokes.

Step 3. In the final stage of the pastel painting, added highlights
and few other details.

A morning at Matheran - A soft pastel painting by Manju Panchal

The soft pastel painting below has been inspired by an early
morning scene from Matheran, a beautiful hill station
close to Mumbai. The sun rays  lit up the foliage as it perforated
through the space  between the wild growth on either sides.

Soft pastel painting of a landscape by Manju Panchal

" If I create from the heart; nearly everything works, if from head
almost nothing." Marc Chagall

The soft pastel painting below has been inspired
by my early morning visit to Karnala Bird Sanctuary.

The sunlit pathway and the surrounding thick
vegetation growth made for a good composition.
The light and contrast in the scene appealed
a lot to me.

Created this soft pastel painting from an early
morning scene at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.

Soft pastel painting of a landscape from Coorg by Manju Panchal

This is a beautiful scene that we came across while we were on our
holidays  at Coorg, a beautiful hill station in Karnataka.
The morning walks through the lush greenery would
rejuvenate us. The place is a paradise for both
artists as well as photographers.

Morning walk in Coorg - Soft pastel painting by Manju Panchal

I am a self taught artist based at Andheri, Mumbai. This is my first post in this blog and I am grateful to Arti Chauhan to include me as a member here.

The painting below is of a beautiful landscape as seen in Coorg, a hill station in Karnataka, where we
spent our holidays on three different occasions. It is an amazing place with coffee plantations and lush green surroundings. I have used soft pastels to create this art work on Fabriano Tiziano paper.

Presently I am busy creating landscape paintings for my upcoming solo exhibition in Gallerie Leela, Andheri East, Mumbai. Inspired and motivated by the beauty of nature, I am using my personal plein air sketches and photographs to create my works.
