Ayanangshu: Rickshaw puller 1,2,3,4,5.
Hand-pulled rickshaws came to India most likely from China during early 20th century. Kolkata is the only city in India, where still you can find hand pulled rickshaws along with Audi and Porsche. According to the statistics, there are 3000 registered, and a few more thousands unregistered, hand-pulled rickshaws on the streets of City of Joy. Although Govt of West Bengal is trying to ban this profession as the very sight of one person pulling other persons, sometimes in bare foot, is itself very painful. In absence of alternative job opportunity or because of difficulties in relocating them in other professions that could not be achieved till date. I felt like painting this hardship of them and hope that Govt can provide them with alternative livelihood

An All Women Art Exhibition on the International Women's Day at Bangalore !
The Desire to create
is one of the deepest yearnings of a human soul and also the starting point of
all achievements. As women we do not content ourselves with the life we have
and hence we desire to do something much more than our potential.
Our desire to do something different, works on our humility, patience and stamina.
It cannot be rushed and summons the courage in us to hurtle ourselves in our
dreams. And all that is beautiful about us lives here today.
Women are so actively
involved in changing our communities through various fields such as literature,
music, dance, medicine, sports, social service and of course in Art. The
feminine spirit carries with it incredible gifts of peace and strength, which
is needed so badly in this world of chaos. Indeed a blessing.
“AKANKSHA” was conceived last October during one of our Group shows. The
aim of Akanksha was to realize all those artistic dreams of the lovely and
passionate emerging women artists who are not able to showcase their works anywhere. Akanksha was conceptualized by 3 emerging artists namely
Shyamala Ramanand, Usha Rai and Kavitha Prasanna, who have undergone various
struggles as self taught artists and understand the passion and energy shown by
emerging artists. This is a platform for them.
For the first time in
Bangalore, Akanksha brings together the realization of the dreams and desires of
50 passionate women artists to share
their rich, vivid and vibrant creative works of art that might be rare
and untapped.
We welcome all those
50 artists today, for our first show.
So please come and
celebrate with us to discover, appreciate the visual treat and take a fancy to
what you may love…….

Tuberose ( Rajanigandha) is one of my favourite flowers and a few stalks regularly adorn my living room. This painting is inspired by a few white lilies that I bought along with my regular Rajanigandhas. Inspite of my penchant for dark colours, I have always chosen these white flowers for my living room, both for their fragrance and purity. The connection goes back to my younger days. After my father suddenly passed away, my Mom used to adorn his portrait with a bunch of these flowers and they became a part of our living room decor. Another connection is with the song Rajanigandha from the movie of the same name, which I sang right through my childhood and am still singing. After many years, I have fallen into the same habit of putting a few stalks in my living room and delighting in their familiar fragrance. All is well, except for the price of these flowers, which is quite steep!
I have to put a few finishing touches, once the painting dries a little.
