Rhythm Des Fleurs and Rosa

I am here after a long time. These two sets of paintings are travelling to far shores to be exhibited in a small show and am I excited!

 Rhythme Des Fleurs

My connection with Indian Classical Music is known to most and it has largely crept into my artwork and way of living. When I was asked to exhibit what I think constitutes me, what more could I think than music and flowers! Each bouquet here is vying for space along with each piece of a set of Tablas ( Indian percussion instruments used for accompaniment in  Indian Classical Music). The tablas are a very important part in North Indian Classical music. They determine complex math which correspond to each note of a rendition and  are often responsible for making or marring a performance. I am lucky to have a set at home, belonging to my Guruji and this is not the first time I have made these serious set of instruments pose for my art! The tablas are a formidable set of instruments for every classical singer - a source of delight as well as fear for the possibility of missing a beat and spoiling the whole performance! All in all, they are the most sought after apparatus in music!

Rosa 1 and 2
These abstract flowers represent the complexity of life. We exist among so many dynamics, but yet we make a beautiful presentation of it!

Mahogany - Kasturi Borkotoki

Oil on wood with palette knives
.20 x16 inches.
My serendipitous foray into wood has spoilt me. After the two pieces of wood which came my way I attacked this piece stashed away from an AC repair job two years back and happily gave vent to my wood withdrawal. My knives have finally met their match on wood. I can slash and flourish without worrying about cutting! Unlike canvas!
The new year has started with a new promise. Some new alliances and new avenues. Am excited and hoping to paint a lot this year!
Meanwhile if anyone wants to give me a gift you can pass any discarded pieces of wood my way.I'd be delighted!:)

Dianthus Vincifera

10x10"
Oil on canvas

Bought these carnations from my regula florist, who is never very excited to see me. I took up a good amount of his time mixing and matching and begging him to give me extra flowers, only to buy a small bunch.
Once I set up the ensemble, my maid suggested that I put the wine bottle alongside, which was in the grocery I had brought in from the same shopping trip as the flowers. So here it is, wine and flowers. What more can a woman want.
A photo of the model for reference!

Gardens by the Bay- Kasturi Borkotoki

Oil on Canvas with palette knives

8" x 10"

I dedicate this painting to the memories of the spectacular Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. I made this painting for my friend who lives there, but the visit to the Gardens so impressed me that I carried some of those impressions onto the canvas. I know this small painting can hardly make up for the wonderous beauty of the Gardens.

Gardens by the Bay is a man- made, huge expanse of gardens by the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore consisting of North Gardens, which are marked by huge gardens highlighted by the supertree grove and South Gardens which consist of two domes - the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest Dome. The most amazing part is the Cloud Forest where one can see how science has been used to recreate nature. You feel like you are in the middle of a real tropical rain forest with a waterfall, mist, typical flora and fauna and cold weather with moss! The gardens have all the varieties of flora and fauna one can possibly imagine, from cacti to tulips. At the time we visited, a tulip festival was going on, where in they created a mini Holland with windmills et all!

Tuberose ( Rajanigandha) is one of my favourite flowers and a few stalks regularly adorn my living room. This painting is inspired by a few white lilies that I bought along with my regular Rajanigandhas. Inspite of my penchant for dark colours, I have always chosen these white flowers for my living room, both for their fragrance and purity. The connection goes back to my younger days. After my father suddenly passed away, my Mom used to adorn his portrait with a bunch of these flowers and they became a part of our living room decor. Another connection is with the song Rajanigandha from the movie of the same name, which I sang right through my childhood and am still singing. After many years, I have fallen into the same habit of putting a few stalks in my living room and delighting in their familiar fragrance. All is well, except for the price of these flowers, which is quite steep!
I have to put a few finishing touches, once the painting dries a little.

Vishwajyoti: White Indian Lotus

Hi! This is my first post on this blog. I am a self-taught artist based in Pondicherry, India. I have been painting for over fifteen years now. I first began with the airbrush, then moved on to oils. Except for an occasional small work here and there, I was always very timid working with watercolors since I found the medium difficult to handle. About 3 years ago I was commissioned  to do 15 florals by Larson&Toubro for their yearly wall calendar, and they wanted the paintings in watercolors. This forced me take up watercolors more seriously. After that there has been no looking back. I have fallen in love with the medium and enjoy experimenting with it.
