Hand-pulled rickshaws came to India most likely from China during early 20th century. Kolkata is the only city in India, where still you can find hand pulled rickshaws along with Audi and Porsche. According to the statistics, there are 3000 registered, and a few more thousands unregistered, hand-pulled rickshaws on the streets of City of Joy. Although Govt of West Bengal is trying to ban this profession as the very sight of one person pulling other persons, sometimes in bare foot, is itself very painful. In absence of alternative job opportunity or because of difficulties in relocating them in other professions that could not be achieved till date. I felt like painting this hardship of them and hope that Govt can provide them with alternative livelihood

Very nice, love the last one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Siggadisart.
DeleteYou have really captured the essence of the street and the plight of the rickshaw pullers. Loved third one the most....the background and the water in the last one are done so beautifully.
