I had fantastic two weeks with my daughter.
Now she has returned to India to continue
with her college routine.
This piece was just a fun work while I was
cherishing the time spent with her.I used felt tip
pens and water colours.

Suchitra Bhosle Portrait Painting Workshop Mumbai 2012

The Workshop structure ---
Learn to see and interpret the portrait with a direct method of “Alla Prima” where the entire portrait is painted wet into wet, in one sitting, recorded directly from life. The principle subject matter will be a live model. You will learn to simplify the subject and indulge in the challenge of expressing the visual tools of painting like shapes, values, edges, color and line with the economy of brushstrokes.
This workshop willinclude conversationally driven demonstrations on Design, Rhythm, Value and Colour. You will take away the basics on not only how to paint a portrait from life but be able to paint any subject matter that exudes the language of shape, value and color. You will also learn the art of simplification to render a successful painting.
-------------------------- -- Day 1 – Portrait Demos. ----------
Session 1-Portrait Sketch-Front profile 3hrs
Watch the process of the block-in and break down of the planesof the head with emphasis on seeing the right Shapes, Values and Edges from a live model.
Break for lunch -1hr
Session2- Portrait Sketch- Side profile or Three-fourths profile 3hrs
This session will reinforce the basic principles of building a portrait from session 1 with a different set up of lighting.
In addition, a peek into the how of mixing skin tones and mixing the right color will be briefly addressed.
This demo will be followed by a Q&A session in an informal interactive setting.
Day 2 (Open only to Workshop attendees) 6hrs, 1-hour lunch break --
Focus will be on seeing color relationships and the ability to mix actual colors that you see resulting in skin tones.
The model will be posed with a side-lit type of lighting. Begin the session watching Suchitra do a quick demonstrationfrom a live model to reinforce the block in and a conversational demonstration on how to see and mix skin tones. Hands on guidance of mixing colors and turning forms with temperature than value will be the emphasis of the day. Color harmony will be discussed based on the specific lighting situation.

Focus of the day will be on applying the visual concept of light and shadow to build the portrait.
Begin with the basic principles of portrait construction, with the model set up with a top-down lighting.
Emphasis will be on defining the key concept of light and shadow and composing the portrait with this concept in mind.
Students will simplify the visual dialogue and take the painting from start to finish with stress on design, composition and the visual concept of light and shadow.
The second half of the day, Suchitra will critique every student’s work to help further understand her concepts.

Due to the potential unavailability of certain brands and brush sizes that I use, try to bring what’s close to being available locally.
Oil Paints – Windsor & Newton Artist’s oil paints.
Titanium white
Lemon Yellow
Cadmium Yellow
Yellow ochre
Cadmium Red
Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Titanium Oxide red/Burnt Sienna
Ultramarine Blue deep
Cobalt blue light
Viridian green
Ivory black
Canvas Panels/Boards
No bigger than 12x16” and no smaller than 9”x12” bring 2 canvasses for the 2days.
Brushes
Bristle brushes flat sizes 2-12
Flat mongoose hair Sables – 2,4,6,10
Medium
Linseed oil/poppy oil/walnut oil
Mineral spirits This would be used to rinse brushes between strokes.
Cloth rags or paper towel rolls to wipe brushes between strokes.
Portable easels
I do encourage students to bring their own portable easels should you have your own.

This painting was inspired from the girls I
see at a supershop in Accra.They look after the
perfumes section of the shop.All are tall,slim and
look very presentable in their traditional outfit.
Of course they don't wear the headdress in the
shop but I have seen ladies wearing in their
functions.And they look so gorgeous and
glamorous in it.
