Water colour painting of Blue Haven beach, West Australia by Manju Panchal
"The only time I feel alive is when I am painting". Vincent Van Gogh
Posted below is one of my latest
works in water colour medium.
I created it using a reference photo
sent by a friend.
Seashore is one of my favorite subjects and I
enjoyed painting the crystal clear waters of the ocean
and the rocks at the beach.

Benaulim beach, Goa. A water colour painting by Manju Panchal
"The only way to deep happiness is to do something you love
to the best of your ability." Richard Feynman
A beautiful solitary tree that I came across at Benaulim beach
in Goa, motivated me to create the water colour painting
as seen below. The tree had its shadow as well as reflection
in the water underneath.
The tree with its drooping leaves and branches also kind of
narrated its survival story. Determined and resolute it stood
facing the strong monsoon winds, rooted firmly to the ground.
We all need this kind of determination
in life at some time or other.
It was fun creating this painting as it was my
maiden attempt at painting palm leaves.

A water colour painting of a palm tree at the beach, by Manju Panchal
"Master water first and then paint." Josh Goldberg
Of late I have been working a lot with
the water colour medium. It is a
challenging medium yet very
satisfying.
Given below is a water colour painting of a
scene that I came across while I was

Step by Step - drawing and painting a seashore. By Manju Panchal
"When you start a painting, it is somewhat outside you.
At the conclusion, you seem to move inside the painting."
Fernando Botero
The scene below is from Bamboo island, five kilometers off the
northern tip of Koh Phi Phi Don, in the Krabi province of Thailand.
The island has stunning beaches with beautiful rocks, white sand
and limestone cliffs behind. In the painting below the beach
is covered by the shadows cast by the tall cliffs behind.
The source of light ie the sun is behind the cliffs and
the beach is on the west side of the island.
Reaching the destination
Soft pastel painting on Canson MT paper
Size 6" X 8"
I titled the painting as "Reaching the destination" with reference
to the beautiful waves which travel a long distance
and finally reach the shore. It is a beautiful feeling
to be at a place like this and to hear the sound of the waves
splashing against the rocks, and then gently kissing
the white sand and merging with the land.
in stages and the step by step images can be seen below.
Step 1. Creating the basic outline
using Camlin charcoal pencil.
Step 2. Blocking in the major shapes with respective colours
keeping in mind the values. Using the soft pastels
from mixed brands.
Step 3. Adding details and final touch up.
At this stage I use pastel pencils at several places.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore - Portrait study work by Manju Panchal
"Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark."
Rabindranath Tagore
Some time back I did a Portrait study work of
on Black Strathmore Artagain paper
using a white pastel pencil.
The black colour of the paper acted as the
darkest tone. Using a white pastel pencil
I had to create the other values.

A morning at Matheran - A soft pastel painting by Manju Panchal
The soft pastel painting below has been inspired by an early
morning scene from Matheran, a beautiful hill station
close to Mumbai. The sun rays lit up the foliage as it perforated
through the space between the wild growth on either sides.

Soft pastel painting of a landscape by Manju Panchal
" If I create from the heart; nearly everything works, if from head
almost nothing." Marc Chagall
The soft pastel painting below has been inspired
by my early morning visit to Karnala Bird Sanctuary.
The sunlit pathway and the surrounding thick
vegetation growth made for a good composition.
The light and contrast in the scene appealed
a lot to me.

Mahogany - Kasturi Borkotoki
Oil on wood with palette knives
.20 x16 inches.
My serendipitous foray into wood has spoilt me. After the two pieces of wood which came my way I attacked this piece stashed away from an AC repair job two years back and happily gave vent to my wood withdrawal. My knives have finally met their match on wood. I can slash and flourish without worrying about cutting! Unlike canvas! The new year has started with a new promise. Some new alliances and new avenues. Am excited and hoping to paint a lot this year!
Meanwhile if anyone wants to give me a gift you can pass any discarded pieces of wood my way.I'd be delighted!:)
